Gene therapy is the replacement of a gene or genes causing a disease with healthy genes and is referred to as gene editing.<\/strong> In treatments targeting genetic changes \u2013 which we call targeted smart drugs \u2013 the damaged gene is not replaced; instead, the production of a damaged cellular product (such as a receptor, growth factor, etc.) by the damaged gene is prevented. Some examples of gene therapy used in cancer treatment include:<\/strong><\/p>

  • CRISPR\/CAS9 technique:<\/strong> This technique uses an enzyme to cut and paste the genetic code to correct mutations in cancer cells or to turn off genes associated with cancer. This technique is being tested in various types of cancer, including lung, breast, blood, and brain cancer.<\/p><\/li>

  • Talimogene laherparepvec (T-VEC):<\/strong> This treatment uses a genetically modified herpes virus to infect and destroy cancer cells. It has been developed against skin cancer malignant melanoma and has been approved by the FDA.<\/p><\/li>

  • Larotrectinib:<\/strong> This drug targets a genetic change called TRK fusion. This change causes the uncontrolled growth of cancer cells. The drug was approved by the FDA in 2017 and has been shown to be effective in various types of cancer.<\/p><\/li>

  • MST-312:<\/strong> This method uses a molecule called MST-312 that damages the DNA of cancer cells to prevent their division. MST-312 is carried to target cells with spherical structures called liposomes. MST-312 stops the growth and spread of cancer cells.<\/p><\/li>
